Let’s talk about salads for a second. Stick with me here- I promise this will make sense.

You know those bland, bagged salads with the greens just starting to brown around the cut edges?

They technically get the job done, but they’re boring, uninspired, and frankly, no one’s excited to eat them.

Now, think about a salad that’s fresh, full of flavor, and made with care- it’s packed with fresh, crisp romaine, peppery arugula, and maybe a sprinkle of mint or parsley for that extra zing. It’s a salad you actually look forward to eating.

Your content is a lot like that.

You can serve up the generic, keyword-stuffed variety, or you can create something fresh, flavorful, and packed with personality. Something that not only draws your readers in, but also keeps them coming back for more.

Here’s some good news: SEO doesn’t have to stomp out your brand’s unique voice.

SEO is all about finding the language your audience already uses and strategically inserting it into your content.

When you create content that speaks directly to your audience’s needs and naturally integrates the right keywords, you get the best of both worlds: content that ranks and feels true to your brand.

So, if you’re ready to stop serving up the bland, bagged-content version of your brand and start creating SEO-friendly content that’s full of flavor, personality, and value, you’re in the right place.

Here are four ways to create personality-driven SEO content that gets found on Google and connects with your readers.

1. Create Content For People, Not Google

When writing SEO copy, your top priority should always be your readers, not search engines.

Start by creating content that truly addresses the pain points of  your audience.

As you write, ask yourself:

What problem am I solving for my audience?

What might they type into a search bar that would lead them to this content?

Use these answers to brainstorm a list of potential keywords, and then validate them (–> learn how in my free keyword research resource, SEO Simplified).

Once your content is written, go back and naturally incorporate your keywords into important places like the:

  • SEO title
  • Post title
  • Introductory paragraph
  • Image file names

The key is to lead with value and solutions first, and let the SEO keywords fall into place afterward.

2. Use "Stop Words" to Keep Things Conversational

A common SEO misunderstanding is that you shouldn’t use “stop words” like “the,” “is,” or “and” when placing focus keywords in your copy.

But in reality, these small words are what make your sentences sound conversational.

Here’s an example from my own recent work:

I wrote an article titled “How To Choose The Best WordPress Hosting For Your Small Business.”

The SEO keyword, indexed by Google is “Best WordPress Hosting For Small Business.”

I chose to insert the stop word “your” in the keyword when I used it in my title, because it sounds much more conversational and engaging than “How To Choose The Best WordPress Hosting For Small Business.”

Google’s algorithms are very smart. And they’ve evolved to understand natural language.

Avoiding stop words won’t improve your SEO but it will make your content sound stiff and unnatural.

Focus on making your copy easy to read.

When you write conversationally, your content flows better, and readers are more likely to stay engaged. That’s a win for SEO!

3. Tell Stories

Your personality is shaped by the experiences that have made you who you are. Let those experiences bring your content to life!

Share your stories, show your personality.

Whether you’re sharing your own transformation, a client success story  (with their permission of course!), or a relevant anecdote, storytelling hooks readers and keeps them reading.

And when you tell a story, you naturally hit on the topics and keywords that resonate with your audience, because you’re speaking their language in a genuine, conversational way.

That language is SEO keywords.

4. Include Original Photos and Videos

Just like storytelling, your graphics have the power to bring your personality front and center.

Stock photos are easy to find and can fill a need in a pinch, but nothing beats a picture of YOU.

Using your own images or videos gives your content instant personality that helps it stand out from the competition.

Plus, you can optimize these images for SEO by including keywords in your alt text and file names.

Original graphics not only improve the user experience but also improve your performance in search rankings. Win-win!

5.Use Testimonials to Speak Your Audience's Language

Your customers’ words are some of your most powerful tools.

Not only do testimonials provide social proof and build trust, but they also reflect the language your audience uses and expects.

Including testimonials brings authenticity to your content and highlights your brand’s personality through the voices of your happy clients.

Incorporating customer reviews does more than just build trust, it naturally introduces the conversational language that appeals to real people and search engines.

Think of testimonials as ready-made content that captures the personality of your brand and the experiences of your audience.

By naturally incorporating their words into your content, you’re not just improving your SEO, you’re making sure your message connects with the people reading it.

TL;DR: Personality and SEO Can Coexist

The bottom line? SEO and personality can absolutely go hand-in-hand.

You don’t have to choose between ranking on Google and sounding like you.

By focusing on content that speaks directly to your audience’s needs and naturally weaving in SEO best practices, you can serve up copy that ranks and connects.

By incorporating your stories, original photos and keeping things conversational, you’ll be able to create personality-driven SEO content that feels fresh and engaging- just like that crunchy, artisan salad- while still getting found on Google.
