Starting a business? It takes guts. And let’s be real- it takes a lot of grit, too.

It’s no surprise that more and more women are stepping up to do just that.

In 2022, almost half of all new businesses in the U.S. were started by women, up from just 29% in 2019 [1].

But success doesn’t come without its challenges.

My first career unfolded within the ivory walls of academia, a space where navigating traditionally male-dominated disciplines and departments often meant that women had to work twice as hard to gain recognition.

Now, as an entrepreneur, I see similar dynamics at play. Whether it’s systemic bias or exclusionary gatekeeping, women continue to face unique obstacles in building their businesses.

That said, as more women-owned businesses thrive, we’re proving that these challenges won’t hold us back.

Why a Website Matters More Than Ever for Female Entrepreneurs

Unfortunately, the gender wealth gap is still a beast we’re battling.

On average, women earn 82 cents for every dollar a man makes [2].

The gap is even more striking for Black women, who earn just 66 cents compared to non-Hispanic white men [3].

And it’s not just the paycheck. Women founders face roadblocks in funding, too. In 2020, female-led startups snagged only 2.3% of venture capital [4].

On top of that, women traditionally have less access to important business networks and opportunities, limiting access to mentorship, partnerships, and connections that are critical for growth [5, 6].

So how do we take control? By building our own networks, launching mentoring programs to lift each other up, and finding creative ways to secure funding.

But just as important, we’re using well-optimized websites to open doors, reaching clients directly and creating opportunities that don’t rely on external gatekeepers.

With solid SEO, your business can reach the right people without needing massive startup capital. You’re putting yourself on the map, in front of the exact clients who need what you offer.

Why Social Media Alone Isn’t Cutting It

Sure, social media is a powerful tool, but let’s face it- it’s also a rollercoaster.

Algorithms constantly change the rules and decide who sees your posts. And keeping up with trends can feel like a never-ending grind.

That’s where your website comes in.

It’s where you’re in complete control of the narrative: your message, your brand, your story.

No more chasing algorithms.

On your website, you can stay true to your voice, values, and vision.

Google vs. Social Media Algorithms

Of course, Google has an algorithm, too, but it works differently.

Social media rewards engagement and it wants to keep users scrolling. Google is all about answering questions.

When you optimize your website for search, you’re making sure that the right people, those actively searching for your services, find you.

Unlike social media, where trends fade fast, a well-optimized website keeps driving traffic and visibility long-term.

The Real Power of an SEO-Optimized Website

With a killer website, you’re not waiting around for a social media platform to give you airtime.

You’re making sure that when potential clients search for your services, they find you. Front and center.

A well-optimized website helps you take charge, providing long-term value and keeping your business visible even when social media trends shift.

I’ll die on this hill:

Your website isn’t just a part of your marketing strategy, it should be the heart of it.

People are using Google to search for the services and solutions you offer. SEO ensures your business is easy to find, putting you in the best position to reach new clients and grow.

It helps build trust, drive traffic, and convert visitors into loyal customers.

In short, your website becomes the foundation of a strong, sustainable digital presence that works for you 24/7.
