Search used to feel straightforward. You typed a question into Google, skimmed a list of links, and made a judgment call about which one seemed worth your time. The structure itself encouraged comparison.
That experience no longer exists.
Today, when you search for information online, you’re often met with answers before you’ve clicked anything at all. Summaries, snippets, highlighted boxes, and confident explanations are presented as conclusions, not starting points. The result looks decisive, even when the underlying information is partial, outdated, or poorly supported.
At the same time, plausibly written AI-generated content has lowered the barrier to publishing at scale. Institutions that once acted as shorthand for reliability no longer operate with consistent guardrails. And content designed to persuade can look nearly identical to content designed to inform.

The key point isn’t that these features are bad. It’s that they change how information is presented and percieved. When search results are presented as definitive answers instead of starting points for inquiry, it becomes even more important for searchers critically evaluate the quality of the information they’re being served.
How Google Decides What Gets Shown First
Search rankings are determined by signals of relevance, authority, and trustworthiness, not by whether information is accurate, complete, or well-reasoned.

Google uses a framework called E‑E‑A‑T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) to assess whether content appears to come from real people who have earned the right to share the information they’re sharing.
Experience: Does the author show firsthand or lived involvement with the topic?
Expertise: Do they have subject-matter knowledge appropriate to the claims being made?
Authoritativeness: Is this person or organization commonly referenced by others in the field?
Trustworthiness: Are the claims transparent, well‑sourced, and accountable?

We’re watching formally authoritative institutions discard long-established scientific consensus, peer review, and evidence-based standards in favor of opinion, ideology, or conspiracy. The name on the masthead can remain the same even as the underlying rigor quietly erodes.
An institutional logo is context, not a guarantee. It still needs to be evaluated alongside authorship, sourcing, and scope.
Underestimating how persuasive tone can be
Clear writing and confident framing feel helpful. They also lower resistance.
Content designed to persuade often borrows the language and structure of content designed to inform. When tone does the work that evidence should be doing, it’s easy to mistake certainty for substance.
Skipping the second click
Many people stop once they’ve found an answer that sounds plausible.
The second click, opening another source or scanning a different perspective, is often where gaps, disagreements, or missing context become visible. Skipping that step makes it easier for incomplete information to settle as fact.

The top result is not the whole picture.
Glance through the full first page of results before settling on a source. Notice which names repeat, which perspectives differ, and which voices are missing entirely.
This quick comparison restores something search used to do naturally: give you range.
2. Look for people who are actually qualified to make the claim
Start by asking a basic question: does this person have legitimate standing to speak on this topic at all? Are they operating within their scope of expertise?
Real expertise is contextual. Someone can be knowledgeable, articulate, and experienced in one domain and still be completely unqualified to make authoritative claims in another.
A mom blogger is not a reliable source on vaccines. A personal trainer is not a reliable source on curing pain. A tech founder is not a reliable source on mental health.
Familiarity with a subject does not equal professional or scientific authority over it.
Look for authors whose training, credentials, or professional role align directly with the claims being made.

When something matters, look for confirmation from sources that don’t rely on each other for framing or evidence. Agreement across independent contexts is more meaningful than repetition within the same network.
And when the stakes are high, don’t stop at “other articles said it too.” Trace the important facts back to the primary source whenever you can: the original study, dataset, court filing, policy text, official guidance, or direct transcript.
